Welcome to AISOC
The Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Society (AISOC) at the Hume Institute for Postgraduate Studies exists to ensure that artificial intelligence (AI) develops in ways that are ethical, inclusive, and beneficial to all. As AI technologies become more pervasive in everyday life, the Centre serves as a critical hub for research, education, and public engagement at the intersection of technology and society.
AISOC promotes a holistic and human-centred understanding of AI and its consequences. Our vision is that people from diverse academic backgrounds and professional fields—across the public and private sectors—can engage meaningfully with AI, understand its opportunities and risks, and contribute to the shaping of its future. Whether exploring how algorithms impact personal freedoms, public institutions, mental health, labour, or global development, AISOC provides a space for interdisciplinary exploration and collaborative action.
AISOC was established in response to a growing global need for spaces where AI can be understood beyond technical metrics—through the lenses of law, ethics, human rights, psychology, policy, and lived experience. The Centre’s foundational aims are threefold: to explore the impact of AI on individuals and society; to promote interdisciplinary dialogue; and to equip professionals and students with the tools to shape the future of AI with confidence and care.

ABOUT US & CORE ACTIVITIES
AISOC works at the interface of research, education, and policy. Our core activities include:
  • Independent research and analysis on AI’s societal impacts
  • Short courses and executive education in responsible AI
  • Policy engagement and contributions to public consultations
  • Public events, webinars, and community engagement initiatives
  • Advisory services to support ethical AI innovation
Through these activities, AISOC enables students, policymakers, and professionals from a wide range of sectors to develop the skills needed to understand, evaluate, and influence AI technologies. We work closely with public bodies, industry, and civil society to ensure that AI serves the common good.
