SUMMARY:The Geopolitics of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:The Geopolitics of Artificial Intelligence\n \n\n Date and Time:\n Monday\, 31st August 2026\n 9:00 AM London Time\n 10:00 AM Central European Time\n \n\n Location:\n Live Online Webinar\n \n\n Hosted by:\n Hume Institute for Postgraduate Studies\n Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Society\n \n\n Speaker:\n Dr David B. Roberts\n Reader in International Security and Middle East Studies\, King’s College London\n \n\n Dr David B. Roberts is Reader in International Security and Middle East Studies at King’s College London\, where he serves as Head of Professional Education and Enterprise within the School of Security Studies and leads the King’s Institute for Applied Security Studies.\n \n\n He is the Founder and Commissioning Editor of Cambridge University Press’s Elements in Middle East Politics series. Before joining King’s College London\, Dr Roberts directed the Gulf Office of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies. His most recent monograph\, Security Politics in the Gulf Monarchies (2023)\, was published by Columbia University Press.\n \n\n Overview:\n \n\n Artificial intelligence is rapidly emerging as a structural force in international politics\, reshaping the foundations of power in ways comparable to earlier transformative general-purpose technologies. This Distinguished Webinar will examine the geopolitics of AI from a global perspective\, exploring how the concentration of computing power\, data\, and advanced semiconductor technologies is creating new hierarchies among states.\n \n\n The session will consider how AI is intensifying strategic competition between the United States and China\, while transforming military capabilities\, intelligence\, economic statecraft\, and the geopolitical leverage derived from control over critical infrastructure and global supply chains.\n \n\n As AI capability becomes an increasingly significant measure of national power\, states are confronted with difficult strategic choices: aligning with one of the major technological powers\, pursuing a strategy of hedging\, or seeking greater technological sovereignty within an international system whose foundational technologies remain concentrated in a small number of competing states.\n \n\n The Gulf region provides a particularly illuminating case study. Countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are deploying sovereign investment to establish themselves as global AI hubs through the development of advanced data centres\, negotiations over access to cutting-edge semiconductors\, and strategic partnerships that increasingly draw them into the widening technological rivalry between Washington and Beijing.\n \n\n Their experiences offer valuable insights into the strategic dilemmas facing ambitious middle powers and illuminate the contours of an emerging international order shaped by artificial intelligence.\n \n\n \n Click here to register\n \n \n\n Click below for more information and to download the poster:\n \n\n \n The Geopolitics of Artificial Intelligence

SUMMARY:Token Economics: The Story Beyond $ per Million Tokens
DESCRIPTION:Token Economics: The Story Beyond $ per Million Tokens\nDate and Time:\nMonday\, 5th October 2026\n9:00 AM London Time (BST)\n10:00 AM Central European Time (CEST)\n7:00 PM Melbourne Time (AEDT) \nLocation:\nLive Online Webinar/MS Teams \nHosted by:\nHume Institute for Postgraduate Studies\nCentre for Artificial Intelligence in Society (AISOC) \nSpeaker:\nSenthoor Punniamoorthy\nPrincipal Architect\, Telstra Chief Architect’s Office \nSenthoor Punniamoorthy is a Principal Architect in Telstra’s Chief Architect’s Office. His work sits at the intersection of emerging technology and business strategy\, translating organisational objectives into architecture and technology roadmaps that engineering teams can implement. \nHe has a particular interest in complex problems that do not fit neatly within a single discipline\, bringing together technological\, commercial and strategic considerations to identify the relevant constraints and shape them into practical solutions. \nOverview: \nDollars per million tokens has become the default currency for comparing artificial intelligence models. Yet\, taken in isolation\, token price can be one of the least informative measures for understanding the true economics of deploying an AI system. \nA headline token price tells us the cost of a unit of model input or output\, but says little about how quickly that output is produced\, how much context a model can process\, how many tokens are required to complete a task\, or the infrastructure\, commercial and regulatory conditions that determine where and how a model can be deployed. \nThis public lecture will look beyond the headline “$ per million tokens” figure to examine what organisations are actually buying when they purchase AI model capacity. Drawing on live market benchmarks and interactive demonstrations\, the session will explore the engineering trade-offs that influence token pricing and the external constraints that providers must operate within. \nThe lecture will consider factors including model performance\, latency\, context windows\, token consumption\, infrastructure requirements and deployment limitations\, demonstrating why superficially cheaper models may not necessarily represent the lowest-cost solution for a particular task or organisational objective. \nThe session will ultimately propose a more rigorous framework for evaluating AI models based on the cost of achieving an outcome rather than simply the cost of an individual token. This approach provides a more meaningful basis for organisations seeking to compare models and make informed architectural\, commercial and strategic decisions about artificial intelligence. \n\nClick here to register\n \nClick below for more information and to download the poster: \n\nToken Economics: The Story Beyond $ per Million Tokens
